Recently, the ACCC issued infringement notices and penalties to three big retailers – Michael Hill, MyHouse and Hairhouse Online – over alleged misleading “Black Friday” and “sitewide” sale claims.
In short: the promos said things like “25% off sitewide”, “Up to 60% OFF RRP EVERYTHING ON SALE + EXTRA 20% OFF” and “SAVE 20% to 50% SITEWIDE”, but in reality, a bunch of products weren’t actually included in those offers.
The ACCC’s position is pretty straightforward: if you say “sitewide”, you need to mean it. Hiding exclusions in tiny fine print or quietly leaving whole categories out isn’t good enough.

Why this matters for your Ballarat e-commerce store
It’s easy to look at a story like this and think, “That’s big-retailer drama, not my problem.” But if you’re running an online store in Ballarat – or you’ve got dreams of growing your e-commerce alongside your bricks-and-mortar – this absolutely is your problem.
Your website isn’t just a digital catalogue. It’s a legal, technical and marketing asset all rolled into one. If those three don’t line up, you can end up in hot water with customers, regulators, and even the almighty Google.
1. Trust isn’t just “nice to have” – it’s an SEO asset
When your website promises “50% off everything” but the reality is more like “12% of things on sale if you squint”, customers feel misled. They bounce, they complain, they leave bad reviews, and they definitely don’t come back next Black Friday.
All of that behaviour feeds into signals that search engines pay attention to:
- Higher bounce rates when people realise the offer isn’t what they expected.
- Short session times because users leave quickly.
- Negative reviews on Google, Facebook and other platforms.
For Ballarat businesses trying to rank for local phrases like “Ballarat online store”, “Ballarat web design” or “gift shop Ballarat”, that loss of trust hurts. Good SEO isn’t just about keywords and meta tags, it’s about delivering what you promise.
2. Web design and promo logic have to match the marketing
Whether your store runs on WordPress with WooCommerce and Elementor, Shopify, or something more custom, your sale logic needs to line up with your marketing claims.
If your homepage banner screams “20% OFF SITEWIDE”, then:
- Your discount rules should actually apply to every product.
- Any genuine exclusions (e.g. gift cards, custom work) should be clearly stated, not buried in grey 10px text in the footer.
- Your category pages and product badges should reflect the deal consistently.
As Ballarat web designers, we see the technical side of this all the time. A small setting missed in the e-commerce plugin, a sale rule applied to only one category instead of all, or an old promotion still cached and showing the wrong info – and suddenly your marketing and reality no longer match.
3. Local reputation is everything when you’re competing in Ballarat
Big national brands can sometimes ride out bad publicity. Local businesses? Not so much.
If customers in Ballarat feel misled by your “sitewide sale”, they’re likely to:
- Tell their friends and family.
- Leave reviews mentioning “misleading sale” or “not everything actually discounted”.
- Choose another local store next time, on or offline.
That hits your revenue and your local SEO. When Google sees strong, consistent positive signals around your brand – good reviews, repeat visits, engaged traffic – it’s more likely to show you for local searches. When it sees the opposite, you slide down the page.
Planning a “sitewide” sale? Here’s your Areweb checklist
If you’re gearing up for Black Friday, Boxing Day, EOFY or just a big weekend promotion, here’s a practical checklist to keep you honest (and compliant).
1. Decide what “sitewide” really means
- Is every single product discounted?
- Are there genuine exclusions (e.g. services, gift vouchers, commission items)?
- If there are exclusions, don’t call it “sitewide”, or make those exclusions extremely clear and prominent.
2. Make the tech match the promise
- Set up your discount rules correctly in WooCommerce / Shopify / your e-commerce platform.
- Test in a staging or draft environment before you go live.
- Spot-check key products across categories: are they all showing the correct discount?
- Check how the promo looks on mobile as well as desktop.
3. Keep your messaging clear and consistent
- Make sure banners, pop-ups, emails and social posts all say the same thing.
- Don’t rely on sneaky fine print to “fix” an over-promised headline.
- If certain categories are excluded, say so upfront – “20% off almost everything – excludes gift cards and custom orders”.
4. Don’t forget the SEO side
- Update (or remove) promotion-specific wording in your meta titles and descriptions once the sale ends.
- Use correct structured data (Offer, SaleEvent) if you’re marking up deals for Google.
- Avoid misleading “50% off everything” schema if it isn’t literally true.
5. Review and learn after each promo
- Look at analytics: did people bounce from sale pages more than usual?
- Did customer support receive complaints about misleading offers?
- Did you see any negative reviews mentioning pricing or sales?
- Use that feedback to tighten things up before the next sale.

- Local SEO – making sure your Ballarat store is visible for the right local searches and backed by solid trust signals.
Because a gorgeous website that quietly bends the truth? That’s not our style – and it’s not great for long-term growth.
